Daniele Ramsey
|
Daniele is a current Doctor working in the NHS having graduates from Imperial College London for his MBBS and gaining a 1st class BSc in Neuroscience. He is a neuroscience researcher with a keen interest in neurosurgery and applying advanced computational methods to big data. With a strong focus on advancing our understanding of the brain and the prognostication of neurological disorders, Daniele has been at the forefront of innovative research in the field. Currently, he is working with the Dementia Research Institute to investigate the link between traumatic brain injury and neurodegenerative disease. This work includes advanced neuroimaging and blood based protein analyses. Daniele brings a unique perspective to the field having conducted clinical electives in neurosurgical specialties across sub-specialties including world-leading institutes such as Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.
In addition to his research work, Daniele has also set up international teaching series on neuroanatomy, driven by a passion for education, neuroscience and inspiring the next generation of neuroscientists and medical professionals. As a co-founder of Imperial Brain & Spine, Daniele hopes to facilitate the systematic review and meta-analysis process and provide mentorship to students keen to engage in research. |
Dr Santhosh G. Thava
|
Dr. Santhosh G. Thavarajasingam is a neurosurgical resident at University Medical Centre Mainz, under Chairman Prof. Dr. med. Florian Ringel. He is also co-founder of Imperial & Brain Spine, and a neuroscience researcher with a focus on the intersection of AR, machine learning, and neurosurgery. He trained at Imperial College London, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Inselspital Universitätsspital Bern, University of Oxford, and the German Cancer Research Center. In addition to his medical studies, which he finished with distinction and prizes, he completed a BSc (First-Class Honours, 1st) in Management from Imperial Business School.
Santhosh has extensive experience in bioinformatics, data science, and machine learning. He is currently associated with the University of Oxford, Harvard Medical School, University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, and EANS, actively collaborating on neurosurgery research. With Oxford he is investigating predictive models in functional neurosurgery, with Cambridge & EANS he involved in meta-analyses, epidemiological studies and RCTs on spinal neurosurgery, and with Harvard his focus is neuro-oncology. He has also obtained his medical training in neurosurgery, neurology, and critical care in UK, Germany and Switzerland, so far. An innovator and entrepreneur, Santhosh co-founded Imperial & Brain Spine with the aim of developing a semi-automated AI-based systematic review and meta-analysis tool to improve the research process. He is also part of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme, and an educator at the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM). |
Hariharan Subbiah Ponniah

Hariharan Subbiah Ponniah is a current doctor working in the NHS having gained his MBBS from Imperial College School of Medicine. He grew up in Reading before starting Medicine at Imperial College London in 2018. He has an interest in Trauma and Orthopaedics, with a special focus on surgical innovation and surgical education.
Hariharan has served as the Co-Chair of the Imperial College Surgical Society, one of the largest and highly active academic undergraduate medical societies nationally. Hariharan also previously sat on the RSM Student Section as a council representative. He has maintained a high academic standard, having achieved distinctions in his pre-clinical examinations and being placed on the Dean’s List and prize winner for his BSc in Surgical, Design, Technology and Innovation. Hariharan has also presented and won prizes for his work at several national conferences and has more than 10 publications to date. He’s a keen sports enthusiast playing squash and cricket in his spare time. |
Dr Mahmoud El-Khatib

Dr Kalyan V. Vemulapalli

Dr Kalyan Vemulapalli is an academic foundation programme doctor who graduated from Imperial College London in 2022. He is completing his academic post at the Royal Free Hospital, affiliated with University College London in the subject of Nuclear Medicine.
He has a keen interest in research and has contributed to several publications including two systematic reviews as part of the Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus series. He has an interest in surgery, specifically ophthalmology and is currently working on a Cochrane systematic review for the Eyes and Vision Group. During his time at medical school, Kalyan has strived to achieve the best he can academically and consistently ranked highly achieving several prizes including a Distinction in Medical Sciences, Distinction in Clinical Sciences, and Distinction in Clinical Practice. He also completed a BSc with First Class Honours in Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London. |
Joshua Killilea
|
Joshua Killilea is a PhD student in Bioengineering at Imperial College London. His PhD thesis is on the development of a bioelectronic local drug delivery system for Glioblastoma Multiforme. Joshua has also graduated with a first class intercalated honours degree (Dean’s List) from Imperial College London. He also achieved a distinction in pre-clinical sciences during his first two years at medical school.
Given his training as an engineer, Josh will be able to bring a unique perspective to the team, offering innovative solutions to different problems. As such, Joshua is deeply passionate about the use of novel biotechnologies to either sense or modulate neurological activity. Josh hopes to shed more light on the potential power of these novel biotechnologies in both the understanding and treatment of a wide range of neurological diseases. Alongside his research interests, Josh has extensive teaching experience. He has lead international summer schools, has racked up 500+ hours mentoring aspiring medics, and given multiple lectures to the younger year medical students. He hopes to aid in the mentorship and development of aspiring researchers as well as expand his skillset by learning from the diverse range of excellent scientists who form the Imperial Brain and Spine Initiative. |
Jasleen is a second year medical student at Imperial College London who is highly motivated to pursue a career in surgery. Having achieved awards for her academic performance, she is actively taking part in a variety of research projects and has been accepted to present her work internationally. These cover a range of topics such as: predictors of response to DBS in OCD, objective assessment tools in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery, and innovations in surgical education.
Furthermore, Jasleen holds several committee roles, including President of Imperial College Society of Research and Academia, Executive Committee Member of Imperial College Surgical Society, and Education Officer of the UK Medical Students’ Association. Jasleen aspires to carry out research at the forefront of the surgical field, identifying ways to refine practice and optimise patient outcomes. She will be working on multiple projects as part of Imperial Brain & Spine. |
Jasleen Nagi

Rishi is a second-year medical student at Imperial College School of Medicine. He has a deep interest in neurology and neurosurgery, having previously conducted projects in GVS neuromodulation, depth perception and helping the Department of Brain Sciences at Imperial with research on patients with traumatic brain injury.
Rishi has a keen enthusiasm with research in topics varying from surgical innovation to medical education, presenting some of his work at a national conference in his first year of medical school. He has worked on projects with multiple committees, including the National Medical Research Association, Imperial Self-Care Academic Research Unit, Imperial Medical Education Research Unit and the Cardiovascular Analytics Group. |

Roma Thakker

Roma Thakker is a 5th year medical student at Imperial College London School of Medicine. She completed her BSc in Neuroscience and Mental Health gaining a 1st Class Honours. During her intercalation, she collaborated with the team at the Imperial Department of Brain Sciences researching cognitive characteristics amongst those with atypical presentations of Alzheimer’s disease. She has since gone on to present this research nationally. Roma has a wide spanning interest across clinical neuroscience and neurosurgery research and is driven to make meaningful contributions to the field.
In her spare time, Roma is also a keen rowing enthusiast- having captained the women’s medics crew, she competes nationally with different boat clubs. |
Dr Rafael Tiza Fernandes

Dr Rafael Tiza Fernandes is a medical doctor from Portugal, with a strong passion for surgery, neuroscience, technology, and space exploration. During his time in medical school, he launched the Medicopatias podcast, engaging specialists and residents to provide valuable insight into various medical specialties in his country, won a neuroscience pitch competition and was involved in multiple projects. After graduating from NOVA Medical School in 2022, Rafael is currently practicing as a doctor in Lisbon, during his foundation year, as he awaits the start of his neurosurgical residency. This period allows him to gain invaluable clinical experience while pursuing his interest in computer science. In his free time, he dedicates himself to learning Python and other programming languages, reading books, and enjoying activities like playing the guitar and tennis.
Rafael is actively involved in aerospace medicine research, with a specific focus on intracranial pressure physiology, at the Center for Aerospace Medicine Studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. Particularly captivated by the transformative potential of AI-based diagnostic tools, he envisions their ability to provide better, more accessible healthcare on a global scale and empower clinicians irrespective of geographical constraints. |
Rithvik Narendranath
|
Rithvik is a second-year medical student at Imperial College London who has a strong desire to pursue a career in neurosurgery. Rithvik has a keen interest in neuroscience, having undertaken a research internship at the department of brain sciences in Imperial. In addition, Rithvik is also involved in many surgically themed research projects and has had his work accepted at national poster presentations. Some of these projects include: the effects of patient and disease characteristics in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus shunt response and the application of 3D modelling in bariatric surgery.
Rithvik has several committee roles in Imperial which include 3rd Year Coordinator of Medical Education Society, Conference Officer for Oncology Society and Research Skills Academy Lead for the Society of Research and Academia. Rithvik is determined to bring new ideas into the field and incorporate them in his research with the hope of making a meaningful contribution to the field of surgery. In his spare time, Rithvik plays the violin in Imperial medic’s orchestra and is a member of ICSM’s tennis team. |
